Salem Community Church has a long and rich history. It is the oldest Methodist church and the fifth oldest church in Alamance County, North Carolina. The church was named “Salem,” meaning shalom or “peace” in the Hebrew language.

Sometime between 1770 and 1790, a church began meeting on the present site in the beautiful rolling countryside. Salem was served by circuit riders of the Methodist Episcopal Church until 1827, when it split from the Methodist Episcopal Church to become part of the Methodist Protestant Church.

The first frame church was built sometime after 1809, with a second structure built after 1855. The current church contains timber from the first two churches. It was renovated in 1950, and brick and stained glass windows were added.

In the 1990s, Salem was designated as a historic site by the Alamance County Historical Properties Commission.

Though we have a rich history, Salem is still a vibrant church, seeking to shine God’s light and minister to the community around us!

We have quarterly community meals and a back to school party.
